29 Apr 09 -
This year’s ANGA Cable, which takes place in Cologne from May 26-28, will be bigger than ever, despite the current economic slowdown. The accompanying congress will focus on analogue switch-off and the development of digital platforms as well as the triple-play strategy of service providers. Peter Charissé, managing director, ANGA Cable, described this year’s highlights to Digital TV Europe.
DTVE: What are the reasons for ANGA Cable’s growth?
We are very proud that we could increase the number of exhibitors once more. With 373 exhibitors from 33 countries the exhibition hall in Cologne will be fully booked again. In the previous year our 369 exhibitors came from 29 countries, of which 50% were based abroad. A similar balanced ratio is showing for 2009. Some 46% of the visitors came from abroad in 2008. Considering that Germany is by far the largest European cable market this is an ideal ratio. Even in a difficult economic environment, our exhibitors believe in us. They know about the special nature of the cable and broadband industry that is less cyclical and characterised by long-term investment plans. The potential of digitisation and broadband triple-play offers has not been fully tapped yet. As a trade fair with a clear-cut profile we offer the huge benefit of targeting business customers in industries where investments will be effected consistently in the upcoming years.
Which topics will dominate this year’s Congress?
With 20 strategy and technology panels, we have once again upgraded the Congress programme significantly. We put more broadband and IP topics on the agenda. The technology panels will feature, among many others, presentations on the latest fibre-optic technologies, HDTV, conditional access/DRM and current IP services. The strategy part will highlight digital broadcasting platforms, IPTV and the analogue-to-digital switchover from many perspectives. The convergence of cable networks and traditional fixed-line providers is a red-hot issue that has caused quite a stir in recent months. Of course, triple-play, HD, DVR and video-on-demand will also play an important role.
What will be the focus of the international Broadband Summit on the second day of the event as the key part of the English-language programme?
Under the headline “Cable versus Wireless: Next Generation Competitors?” CEOs and CTOs from five countries will discuss the effects of new wireless networks such as LTE and Wimax on broadband competition in Europe: Svein Erik Davidsen [Canal Digital, Norway], Nick Fielibert [Cisco], Thomas Hintze [UPC Austria], David Keeley [Motorola], Martin Kull [Com Hem, Sweden], Philippe Le May [Numericable, France], Parm Sandhu [Unitymedia, Germany) and Wim Sweldens [Alcatel-Lucent].
What are the main areas of focus for the exhibition?
This year, hybrid network solutions for future 100Mbps networks will be especially interesting. Further focal points will be new IPTV and on-demand solutions that increasingly enhance the traditional TV offerings. Here we see many providers with cost-efficient new developments on the starting blocks. Also the latest developments in terminal devices, personal video recorders especially, are something to look forward to.
Which exhibitors will be new to ANGA?
There is a noticeable increase in companies developing and providing IP services. We are especially pleased that providers of conditional access systems have booked significantly more floor space this year. This also indicates that we have become the leading market place for all kinds of broadband and TV network operators.
What other highlights will visitors see this year?
A special highlight will be our popular ANGA Cable Night. The evening event at the Rheinterrassen location will now be officially open to political figures, the media and external guests.
ANGA Cable 2009 has a revised ticket structure. A new “All Inclusive Ticket” for €200 plus VAT includes access to the fair and congress as well as the ANGA Cable Night. For the first time a “technology ticket” will be available for €75 plus VAT, valid for the technology panels and the exhibition. The three-day pass for the exhibition is €20 including VAT. ANGA Cable exhibition and congress tickets can be ordered online via www.angacable.com/registration.
