Discovery to sub-license Olympics to German pubcasters
Eurosport, ARD and ZDF will air live coverage and highlight packages of the games up until 2024.
The partnership will cover four Olympic Games, giving German spectators access to free-to-air coverage as well as more extensive pay TV coverage on Eurosport.
The sublicensing deal covers rights to Winter Games in PyeongChang and Beijing in 2018 and 2022 respectively as well as the Toyko Olympics in 2020 and the 2024 games, whose location has yet to be confirmed.
Eurosport CEO Peter Hutton sid that the deal was “another example of our forward-looking and groundbreaking approach to premium live sports”. He said that the broadcaster’s goal was to bring the games to as wide as possible an audience through “free TV partnerships with leading national broadcasters across Europe, such as ARD and ZDF”.
