Taiwanese vendors Mediatek, MStar and Novatek currently dominate the 4K TV system-on-a-chip (SoC) supplier market, according to StrategyAnalytics.

The research firm’s connected home devices report, ‘The Impact of UHD of TV SoCs’, claims that while US-based Sigma Designs leads 4k TV silicon technology innovation, it is Taiwan’s MStar and Mediatek that drive volume.

It also said that Sigma and fellow US specialists Marvell, along with China’s Huawei-owned HiSilicon, are “leading a group of vendors that are implementing new designs to support next generation Ultra HD TV features and standards.”

“Silicon is readily available today to support ‘phase 1 UHD’ requirements such as 60fps, HEVC Main 10 and HDMI 2.0. Leading TV manufacturers are now looking to implement advanced Ultra HD features such as High Dynamic Range and Wider Colour Gamuts in order to build on the early momentum in the market and create product differentiation,” said David Watkins, service director, connected home devices, StrategyAnalytics.
